Travel Insurance

Any travel insurance begins with the purchase of a medical insurance policy, which insures his life and health. There are two types of medical policy: compensation and service. They differ among themselves by the mechanism of insurance payment.

With the service form of a medical policy, a tourist abroad receives free medical care. Treatment bills are issued to the insurer through an intermediary: an international insurance or service company.

Compensatory type of medical policy is less beneficial for tourists. According to the policy, the tourist himself pays for treatment abroad, and upon arrival in Russia presents the reporting documents (bills, certificates, receipts) to the insurer. In order to receive a legitimate insurance indemnity, the policyholder must have all the necessary and correctly completed originals of medical documents. Any inaccuracy in the documents may make insurance payment impossible.

Travel agencies insure their customers?

Tourists are compulsorily insured by the tour operator if the country of visit obliges to insure the risk of an accident and sudden illness of tourists. Compulsory travel insurance is provided mainly for the provision of first aid.

The insurance contract confirms the insurance policy, which is mandatory drawn up in two languages: in the state language of the country of visit and in Russian.

In order to avoid possible travel hassles, the tourist should think about voluntary medical insurance, which can cover all unforeseen insurance risks associated with the health and life of the insured person. Assistance in obtaining this insurance is a direct responsibility of the tour operator or travel agent.

The standard package of compulsory insurance for tourists includes a list of the cost of the most necessary services:

  1. inpatient treatment and care (evacuation from the scene to a medical organization, medical repatriation of the insured person to his homeland, etc.);
  2. treatment of emergency illness and injury;
  3. purchase of medicines as prescribed by a doctor;
  4. transportation of the children of the insured person home;
  5. repatriation of the body.

It should be borne in mind that emergency dental conditions are within the insurance policy only in case of acute toothache and an injury resulting from an accident.

Compulsory risk insurance for emergency medical care is defined by the EU and the Schengen Union. Other medical risks relate to voluntary insurance.

Voluntary Travel Insurance

The medical risks of voluntary medical insurance can either be included in one policy along with compulsory insurance, or be separately documented by another document. The following list of insurance risks is subject to voluntary insurance:

  • trip cancellation (including visa refusal);
  • medical risks;
  • accident occurrence (with full or partial disability);
  • loss (theft, loss, delay) of baggage;
  • theft (loss) of documents;
  • expenses for early return to the motherland (objective reason);
  • the onset of civil liability to third parties.

The most common types of travel insurance include:

  • travel cancellation insurance;
  • voluntary health insurance;
  • accident insurance;
  • baggage insurance.

Travel Cancellation Insurance

This type of insurance is quite popular among travelers. The reasons for the cancellation trip can be very different:

  • death (illness) of the insured person (close relatives);
  • accident;
  • visa issuance;
  • damage to documents;
  • receipt of the summons (to the military registration and enlistment office or to the court).

Travel cancellation insurance will be able to cover all travel expenses of the policyholder (tour cost). To do this, you need to declare your recognizance not to leave and provide a package of documents confirming the costs incurred (tickets, visa, receipts, etc.). It is important that the main document explaining the reason for not to leave is present: refusal from the consulate to issue a visa, a doctor’s certificate of inpatient hospitalization and other documents.

The average cost of insurance is four percent of the cost of the selected tour.

Voluntary health insurance

Health insurance policy can be purchased independently, if it is not included in the price of the tour. A medical policy protects against possible health troubles while traveling. If necessary, the insured will be sent to the clinic, doctors and medicines will be paid for, delivered to Russia for free. The insurer, for a long stay of the insured person in inpatient treatment, pays for his visits by relatives.

When acquiring a medical insurance policy, it is very important to study in detail the list of insurance risks. For example, many insurers do not include risks such as sunburn or sun allergies in the insurance list and therefore are subsequently denied reimbursement of expenses.

To avoid many controversial issues, the policyholder must be informed of the actual state of his health before entering into an insurance contract. If the insurer becomes aware of the fact that the policyholder abroad has exacerbated a chronic illness or has gone there already sick, then the policyholder will most likely be left without insurance coverage for expenses incurred.

It is important to know!

The consequences of neglect of basic safety precautions, drug or alcohol intoxication are not under any circumstances covered by a health insurance contract.

Accident insurance

Accident insurance, in comparison with health insurance, is not so general in nature and guarantee the prompt provision of necessary assistance. Tourists have accidents much more often than the occurrence of various diseases, therefore, many insurers are invited to purchase two insurance in one: from an accident and a medical policy.

To pay the insurer insurance compensation for accident insurance, the insured must provide: a medical examination report, a temporary disability sheet, an extract from the medical card.

In the event of the death of the insured, the heirs shall provide the insurer with a notarized copy of the death certificate, the report of the local police and an extract from the medical card to receive insurance compensation by the heirs.

Baggage Insurance

When baggage insurance, the insurance object is the property interests of the insured person, which are associated with the loss, partial damage or loss of baggage during the trip, in which the safety of baggage became the carrier’s responsibility.

Baggage loss means the complete loss of things without a real possibility of their recovery. Damage to luggage means a partial loss by things of their consumer properties. The loss of baggage caused by the fault of the tourist does not apply to the insured event.
